An elephant shaped rock cut can be found at the Kayama Hill.  On the northern area of the Kayama elephant, you can see an inscription as ‘Tisa’ on a rock cut bench. Tisa was the name of one of Ashoka’s brothers. Ashoka became a Buddhist and stayed with his preceptor Dhamarakhita in Kalinga in the last days of his life and popogated Buddhism by constructing numerous Buddhist stupas and other sculptures in this Orissa Buddhist Heritage Site.

The exposed structure with the inscription as ‘Tisa’ signifies a close relation of Ashoka’s brother with Kalinga. Tisa was the only one of his 99 brothers, who was spared from being killed by Ashoka.
